This four-hour adaptation is luscious, patient, and features a jaw-dropping proposal scene that all but shudders with swoony catharsis.
–Slate magazine, on the Jane Eyre adaptations, talking about the BBC’s last adaptation in 2006, starring Ruth Wilson and Toby Stevens. I agree with this writer’s assessment — the 2006 adaptation was the best. Even though much of the dialogue was modernized, it captured the essence of the novel and Ruth Wilson’s Jane Eyre was pitch perfect — exactly how I always imagined the character.
However, I haven’t seen Cary Fukunaga’s new version yet, so my opinion may change over the next month. I’ve heard so many good things, I’ll have to make time to drive to Atlanta to see it.
